As one of our Louisiana readers, you know that strong winds can move into your area without notice. If you’re behind the wheel when the wind picks up, there are a few things you can do to improve your overall level of safety.
– Slow down. If you do nothing else, this is the one step you should take. The slower you’re driving the easier it is to control your vehicle. This is particularly true if you’re in a high profile vehicle, such as a truck or SUV (or maybe even an RV).
– Keep both hands on the wheel at all times. Since you never know when a gust could hit your vehicle, it’s a must to keep both hands on the wheel to ensure that you have full control.
– Watch for flying objects. When the wind picks up, there’s a chance that debris could fly at and/or around your vehicle. If this happens, it has a way of taking your eyes of the road.
Along with the above, make sure you’re always paying attention to other drivers as well. Even if you’re taking steps toward remaining safe, another driver could be ignoring the conditions. If this happens, you could still be involved in an accident.
If you find yourself involved in an accident, move your car to safety and call for help. If you’re injured or the weather conditions are too dangerous to exit your vehicle, stay put until an ambulance and police arrive.
Once you receive treatment and assess the accident, you can then learn more about your legal rights and how to receive compensation for property damage and your injuries.
