19-year-old dead after Mardi Gras crash

A 19-year-old woman died in a tragic accident while returning home from Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans last Monday. The young woman was riding as a passenger in a car being driven by her friend, also 19, when they got into a serious accident.

According to authorities, the teens were on their way to Little Rock and traveling on I-55, when their vehicle suddenly went off the road. The driver tried to regain control of the car, but she overcorrected, and the car went into the median and flipped multiple times. The driver was ejected, but miraculously she survived. She is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at a local hospital. Unfortunately, the passenger was not so fortunate. Emergency responders reported that she was dead at the accident scene. Police say that she had her seat belt on when they found her.

The injured driver received a summons for careless driving and not having a driver’s license. Police also took blood samples, which are being tested at the Louisiana state crime lab.

Coworkers told reporters that the two young women were close friends and they first met at the clothing store where they both worked. The owner of the store said that he will dearly miss the woman who died. He said that she was a lovely person and loved by many.

Family members of drivers and passengers killed in car accidents will always want to know “why” the accident occurred. Often, they will also want to gain some sense of justice and closure regarding the incident. One way to pursue that is through a wrongful death claim against the party deemed to be responsible for the fatal accident.
