Louisiana has a rich culture that cannot be found elsewhere. From the incomparable neighborhoods of New Orleans to the seats of state power in Baton Rouge, there are sights to see, flavors to savor, and adventures to experience throughout Louisiana. All this comes with risks, though: Louisiana is one of the most dangerous states in the entire nation.

Although Louisiana’s overall crime rate is high, this does not mean you must move out of the state or stay away. There are parts of Louisiana that are relatively safe and present a low risk of being a crime victim. Staying safe while in Louisiana comes down to practicing basic safety skills and assessing your risk based on your location.

Considering the number of reported crimes in the 29 metropolitan parishes, the following five jurisdictions stand out for their low levels of criminal activity, especially crimes against persons. While the incidence of crime is just one way to measure the safety of a community, it can provide a glimpse into your risk of serious injury or death

East Feliciana Parish

This parish includes the towns of Jackson, Clinton, Wilson, and Norwood. In 2022, it had the lowest number of reported crimes of all types and crimes against persons among Louisiana’s metropolitan parishes. That year, East Feliciana Parish reported 382 total crimes, 90 of which were crimes against persons.

De Soto Parish

The seat of De Soto Parish is Mansfield. Although this parish reported more crimes than a few other metropolitan parishes, it had the second-lowest number of crimes against persons. Only 100 of the parish’s 580 reported crimes were classified as having been committed and resulting in injury to others.

Plaquemines Parish

Like De Soto Parish, Plaquemines Parish had fewer crimes against persons than most other metropolitan parishes. Out of 551 reported crimes, 121 were committed against another person. The majority of crimes that occurred here in 2022 were classified as crimes against society.

Caddo Parish

In 2022, there were over 1,300 reported crimes in Caddoo Parish. However, the vast majority of these were property crimes. The parish had 713 property crimes, but only 180 crimes against other people were reported.

St. Helena Parish

St. Helena Parish includes the cities of Greensburg and Montpelier. In 2022, this parish reported only 476 crimes, a number significantly lower than other metropolitan parishes. However, 191 of these were crimes committed against others.

Louisiana Crime Rates

As of 2022, Louisiana’s violent crime rate stood at 628.6 per 100,000 people, which was considerably higher than the nation’s rate of 380.7 per 100,000. In the metropolitan parishes alone, law enforcement reported 15,764 incidents of violent crimes.

Other statistics paint a grim picture of public safety in these parishes:

  • 116,548 reported criminal offenses of all types
  • Over 31,000 reported crimes committed against other people
  • 61,496 property crimes
  • 23,616 offenses classified as crimes against society

Since these statistics reflect only those offenses reported to the state by metropolitan parishes and jurisdictions, the total number of crimes in Louisiana is higher.

Stay Safe In Louisiana

While some Louisiana parishes report fewer criminal offenses than others, crime happens everywhere. So do car accidents, natural disasters, and other events that can leave you injured or suffering a loss. Knowing the dangers present in any area that you plan to visit or live in is a solid first step toward protecting yourself.
