Rick is a proud graduate of the University of Florida and a loyal Gator. He was awarded a Bachelor’s degree in his major, Political Science with an emphasis in Public Administration, also receiving a Minor in Environmental Studies. Upon graduation Rick worked in Court Administration in the Benton-Franklin Superior Court system in Washington State. Later he was employed in the Nuclear Power Industry, leading to his return to New Orleans in 1982 to work at the Waterford III Nuclear facility in Taft, Louisiana. Upon applying to law school, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Loyola University School of Law (New Orleans) and graduated from Loyola in 1989. At Loyola Rick met fellow student John Redmann, and the two represented Loyola Law School in the National Association of Trial Lawyers Student Trial Competitions, successfully competing against other trial teams from across the county. The son of a frequently moving Civil Engineer who built power plants, Rick has lived in or visited every state in America except Alaska – with plans to see his last un-visited state.
Rick has extensive experience in all types of vehicular accidents and premises liability litigation as both plaintiff and defense counsel. Rick served in the last Morial Administration as an Assistant City Attorney defending the City of New Orleans in multiple million-dollar claims, and later, as a founding partner in his former firm, Barnes & Root, LLC, Rick represented clients in a variety of serious injury and wrongful death cases, including Jones Act and maritime cases, civil rights, police brutality, and vehicle accident cases. Rick has also represented many hundreds of clients in a variety of Pharmaceutical and Medical Device cases in Federal Courts throughout the country. Rick was appointed by the Hon. Freda L. Wolfson, former Chief Judge of the New Jersey Federal District Court, to be one of 16 members of the Plaintiff Steering Committee in the nationwide litigation against Johnson & Johnson, fighting for woman who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder contaminated with asbestos. He works with his colleagues at the Redmann firm on a variety of cases, focusing on jury trial preparation and the firm’s appellate practice.
