Recognizing symptoms of brain injury

Posted in Brain Injury,Our Blog on February 28, 2018

If you or someone you love in Louisiana suffers a blow to the head, the injuries may prove minor, requiring little, if any medical treatment, or they can prove catastrophic, leading you or your loved one to require a lifetime of ‘round-the-clock care. Recognizing the severity of the injury suffered can help you make important decisions about future care and treatment, as mild, moderate and severe traumatic brain injuries can impact your life in varying ways. At the Law Office of John W. Redmann, L.L.C., we understand how devastating brain injuries often are, and we have helped many clients whose quality of life suffered following a head injury caused by another’s negligence.

According to the Mayo Clinic, if you or someone you love suffers a mild TBI, be on alert for symptoms that might include brief loss of consciousness, changes in sleep patterns or confusion. Mild TBI sufferers may also experience nausea and vomiting, and they may, too, develop speech problems, exhibit strong mood swings, suffer sensitivity to light or sound, or struggle to maintain balance.

Moderate or severe TBI sufferers may exhibit similar symptoms, but they may also have symptoms that are more pronounced in nature. Moderate or severe TBI victims may suffer seizures or lose consciousness for up to several hours, and they may also exhibit uncharacteristic irritability, drowsiness or depression. They may also have dilated pupils or clear fluids draining from their ears or noses, and they may exhibit more aggression or agitation than is typical.

Brain injury symptoms sometimes manifest differently in children than they do adults. If you have concerns that your child may have suffered a TBI, look out for signs of depression, changes in sleep patterns or a loss of interest in activities or toys that they typically enjoy. Children with brain injuries may also suffer seizures or experience changes in eating or nursing routines. More about brain injuries is available on our web page.
