Tips On A Safe And Happy Halloween

We all love Halloween, but most of us probably aren’t aware that, according to automobile association AAA, Halloween is the most dangerous single day of the year for pedestrians in the United States. Keeping that in mind, it’s very important to remember to be extra cautious while driving on Halloween night and while Trick-or-Treating with your children.

The internet is a great resource for keeping yourself and your family safe on Halloween. The Centers for Disease Control has a list of easy-to-remember tips available on its web site. Among the best tips is for Trick-or-Treaters to carry with them a flashlight, both to light up dark areas and to make themselves easier to see for drivers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has some tips on costume and toy safety available online as well. It advises parents to be careful in allowing their children to go outside wearing masks that might obstruct their vision. The Food and Drug Administration has some Halloween food safety tips available. Among its warnings are to be sure parents have a chance to inspect their kids’ Trick-or-Treat goodies.

Finally, it should go without saying that nobody should drive while intoxicated. But it bears repeating on such an unusual night as Halloween. Drunk driving is dangerous enough, but on a night when children and families are out on the streets could be recipe for a tragedy. So please, if you’re going to a Halloween party, designate a driver. And everybody behind the wheel should slow down in neighborhood and pedestrian areas-even if they don’t see Trick-or-Treaters-as a precaution.
