New Orleans Children’s Hospital Infections Attorney

Children’s Hospital of New Orleans has confirmed that in the summer of 2017, bacteria on its surgical equipment caused an outbreak of infections in children who had undergone cardiac surgery at the hospital.

At least 12 children were hospitalized as a result, and many more might have been affected.

The bacteria, mycobacterium abscessus, is described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “distantly related to the ones that cause tuberculosis and Hansen’s disease (leprosy). It is part of a group of environmental mycobacteria and is found in water, soil and dust. It has been known to contaminate medications and products, including medical devices.”
