Tips for Preventing Boat Accidents

As Louisiana lakes begin to fill up with summertime boaters, it is a good idea for families to think about developing a strategy for staying safe on the water. Just like having an emergency plan for evacuating from home if there is a fire or other unexpected danger, having a plan for preventing boat accidents may save lives.

The U.S. Coast Guard publishes stories on its "Boating Safety" website. One of the narratives describes the lessons a group of divers learned when they got separated from one another and from their boat. The narrator tells the changes the group has made for enhanced future safety. They have:

  • Created a plan for checking in with one another every 20 minutes.
  • Had their crew wear belt packs that are inflatable and less bulky than regular life vests but with similar life-saving capabilities
  • Moved their throwable cushion within visible reach to prevent it from getting buried beneath diving or other gear

The U.S. Coast Guard reminds readers of important safety tips for more effective protection on the water:

  • Always wear a life jacket
  • Require passengers to wear life jackets, too
  • Complete a course in boat safety
  • Get the boat checked by the Coast Guard or another vessel examiner
  • "Never [boat] under the influence (BUI)"

Keeping this guidance in mind could very well prevent a haphazard boat accident on the water this summer.

In addition, the Department of Homeland Security describes how one father prepared his children for the unthinkable by drilling them with simulation exercises. He recommends all families do the same.
