Distracted driving continues to claim Louisiana lives

Anytime you take to the roadway in Louisiana, you assume a certain level of risk, but your risk of getting into a serious accident increases exponentially if other motorists drive while distracted. Regrettably, distracted driving continues to increase across Louisiana and the nation, with distracted driving behaviors now linked to more than half of all injury-related crashes on state roads. At the Law Office of John W. Redmann, L.L.C., we understand the dangers you and your loved ones face when others drive distracted, and we have helped many who suffered injury in distracted driving-related crashes seek appropriate recourse.

Per the Shreveport Times, more than 700 people lost their lives on state roads in 2017 alone, and distracted driving was a factor in more than 50 percent of all Louisiana crashes involving injury that same year. While drivers across all age groups engage in distracted driving behaviors, the problem is particularly prevalent among teens between the ages of 15 and 19. In addition to being four times as likely as adults to get into accidents while using cellphones, research shows that teenagers experience distractions a quarter of the entire time they spend at a vehicle’s controls.

While texting and using handheld phones are common causes of distracted driving-related accidents, there are numerous other factors that also have a hand in drawing attention away from today’s motorists. For example, many drivers are regularly using video-sharing websites while behind the wheel, with one of today’s most popular video-sharing websites now falling within the top 10 websites drivers use behind the wheel.

While Louisiana has taken some strides to help reduce distracted driving on state roads, such as prohibiting texting while driving, it is clear more must be done to put a stop the number of lives needlessly lost within state lines. More about distracted driving accidents is available on our web page.
