Causes and signs of traumatic brain injury in women

Traumatic brain injury - the term itself seems scary. The symptoms are even scarier. What residents of Louisiana should know about TBIs is what causes them and what signs reveal them.

The Brain Injury Association of Louisiana outlines the main culprits in TBIs. Citing statistics, the BIALA reports that "40 percent of all TBIs in the US" result from falls, indicating trip-ups as the number one reason for traumatic injuries to the brain. Blunt trauma follows in the number-two spot. Motor vehicle accidents are third, and assaults come in at number four. Other contributors the BIALA points to are sports injuries, bike accidents and violent shaking.

The National Women's Health Network adds to the conversation with a look at specific assaults that often result in brain injuries. A frequently overlooked violence that ties into TBIs in women takes place between intimate partners. The NWHN cites statistics that estimate as many as 20 million women may struggle with the effects of TBI experienced in an incident of domestic violence.

These wives and moms may display some of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty with "everyday tasks like shopping and cooking"
  • Light and sound sensitivity as well as motion sickness
  • Inability to sleep or the opposite: lack of ability to keep from sleeping
  • Extreme mood swings, "from depression to euphoria"

Anyone who has suffered a blow to the head should be aware of these signs of traumatic injury; however, the NWHN points out just how crucial it is for women to get the help they need if they have sustained a brain injury from domestic violence.
