Gabriel García Márquez, In Memoriam

Last week the world lost one of its great literary figures: Gabriel García Márquez, perhaps the most important Latin American author of his time.

Mr. García Márquez-or Gabo, as he was known by his fans-was born in Aracataca, Colombia in 1927. Over the course of his life he worked as a journalist, a short story writer, and a novelist. He is best known to American audiences for his novels, including bestsellers One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love In the Time of Cholera (1985). His books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.

His literary legacy is unparalleled. As the New York Times put it in its obituary of Mr. García Márquez, "He was among a select roster of canonical writers-Dickens, Tolstoy and Hemingway among them-who were embraced both by critics and by a mass audience." More importantly, he defined and embodied the Latin American spirit and was the face of its literary movement in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, and brought Latin American literature to worldwide attention and respect.

With his passing, it should be time to discover and rediscover Gabriel García Márquez's work. Many of his short stories are available for free online, and his novels are available from Amazon and other booksellers.

Here's to Gabo, a great man and a true legend, for a life well-lived and an extraordinary legacy as one of the world's great literary voices. Gracias!
