Knowing What TBI Is Could Make Difference Between Life And Death

Brain-Injury

It should come as no surprise to our readers that elderly Louisianans are more vulnerable to injury than their younger counterparts. After all, as we get older, our footing becomes less sure, our bumps and bruises don't heal as quickly, and our bones become more brittle. However, we are tough; in many cases, we don't want to believe that we might be more seriously injured than we might think.

We wanted to draw your attention to an article on brain injuries that we posted to our site a while back. In the article, we discussed how older people are both more susceptible to receiving a traumatic brain injury, known as TBI, and to be hospitalized for TBI - and even to die from one.

That's why it's crucial for family and friends of the elderly need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of TBI. Time is of the essence when it comes to treating a brain injury, so the earlier that medical attention can be sought, the better.

What people may realize is that many of the symptoms of TBI are often not all that different from what elderly people experience every day. However, caregivers and family members should be concerned if the symptoms seem to come on all at once or appear to rapidly get worse.

These symptoms may include, but are not limited to:

Headaches

Swelling and/or bruising on the head

Blurred vision

Ringing in the ears

Fatigue

Sudden personality changes

Head injuries are serious business. Family and friends owe it to themselves, and their loved ones, to ensure that if someone has suffered TBI, they are cared for as soon as possible.
