JUSTICE MATTERS WITH ATTORNEY JOHN "JUAN" REDMANN
Editor's note: This is a continuation of a series of articles by Redmann, special legal-political correspondent for Herencia Hispana Publications.
1. What would you like the public to know about you? Your work?
I have tried always to be fair and impartial to all the parties who have come into my courtroom, and to treat each person with dignity and respect - the same way I would like to be treated.
2. As a Louisiana native, do you have an opinion on how Katrina has had and will have an effect on our region, and what role do you believe Latin-Americans have played and may still play in our recovery?
Katrina had a devastating effect upon our legal system, in my opinion setting this area back many years. Things are just now starting to get back to normal. More generally, obviously many Latin-Americans have been instrumental in literally rebuilding our community and have done a great job. I hope many of these individuals will locate here permanently with their families.
3. Regarding the rights of individuals who have their cases decided by you, what kind of treatment may Hispanics - including undocumented Hispanics - expect from you and your office?
The use of interpreters, even in cases where an individual may speak some English, before any proceedings take place, is key to protecting their interests. Otherwise, Hispanics can expect the same impartial treatment I try to provide to everyone.
4. What are some of the best things about serving as a judge? What are some of the worst?
One of the best things is, in my own area of authority, seeing justice is done. One of the worst is seeing the ever-increasing numbers of people, especially very young people, messing up their lives with drugs and alcohol.
5. What advice do you have for young people who have aspirations about pursuing a career in law?
Lawyers can do a great deal of good if they wish, serving the public in many different capacities. The law is also a career which allows one to continue to grow professionally and intellectually, because the law always continues to evolve.
6. How would you like to be remembered for your years of dedication and service on the bench as you face retirement at the end of December, 2008?

1. ¿Qué le gustaría que el público supiera de usted y de su trabajo?
Siempre he procurado de ser justo e imparcial a todas las partes que se han presentado en mi tribunal y tratar a cada persona con dignidad y respeto - del mismo modo que me gustaría que me trataran a mí.
2. Como nativo de Luisiana, ¿tiene alguna opinión en como Katrina ha tenido y tendrá un efecto en nuestra región?, y ¿qué papel cree usted que han tenido, y todavía podrán tener, los latino americanos en nuestra recuperación?
Katrina tuvo un efecto devastador en nuestro sistema legal en mi opinión, haciendo a nuestra área retroceder muchos años. Las cosas están apenas empezando a volver a la normalidad. Mas generalmente, es obvio que muchos latinoamericanos han sido instrumentales en literalmente reconstruir nuestra comunidad y han hecho un trabajo excelente. Espero que muchos de estos individuos se queden a vivir aquí permanentemente con sus familias.
3. En cuanto a los derechos de los individuos cuyos casos son decididos por usted, ¿qué clase de trato pueden los hispanos - incluso los hispanos indocumentados - esperar de usted y el personal de su oficina?
El uso de intérpretes, aun en casos en los que el individuo habla algo de inglés, antes de que el proceso del juicio inicie, es clave para proteger sus intereses. Aparte de eso, los hispanos pueden esperar el mismo trato imparcial que yo procuro proporcionar a todos.
4. ¿Cuales son algunos de los mejores aspectos de servir como juez? ¿Cuáles son algunos de los peores?
Uno de los mejores, en mi propia área de autoridad, es ver que se hace justicia. Uno de los peores es ver un número constantemente en aumento de gente, especialmente gente muy joven, echando a perder sus vidas con las drogas y el alcohol.
5. ¿Qué consejo tiene para los jóvenes que tienen aspiraciones de seguir una carrera legal?
Los abogados pueden hacer mucho bien si quieren, sirviendo al público en muchas diferentes capacidades. La ley es una carrera que le permite a uno continuar creciendo profesional e intelectualmente, porque la ley siempre continua evolucionando.
6. ¿Cómo le gustaría ser recordado por sus años de dedicación y servicio en el tribunal al enfrentar su jubilación a fines de diciembre 2008?
"Fue siempre justo."
